How Do I Talk To My Daughter About Having a Healthy BODY IMAGE?

By Dannah Gresh, Creator of Secret Keeper Girl

Body image is something nearly every woman on the face of God’s beautiful earth has struggled with at one time or another. Can’t you relate, Mom?

When I take an honest look and give myself an honest listen, I am confronted with my own ability to harm my daughters. They are listening to you and I.

Our daughters listen when we look in the mirror and complain about our hair and wrinkles. They listen when we say we are fat and ugly. They hear us put ourselves down. They hear us compare our bodies and wardrobes to that of Brittany’s mom.

Studies have been done to confirm that what a mom says about her own body becomes a consuming thought in her daughter’s mind about her own body. The result? One magazine reported that 30% of ten-year-olds are worried about their body image.

Before you can talk to your daughter about having a healthy body image, you must have one! As women we have been made in the image of God. Perfectly Crafted. Wonderfully Made. Dearly Loved.  Mom, we have to be her role model. We must believe what God says about our beauty – we must speak about our own beauty in a positive light  because our girls are listening!

Once you are living in the freedom of God’s beautiful creation (your body!) you are equipped to talk with your daughter about having a healthy body image. Dive in to scripture together: 1 Samuel 16:7, Psalm 139, Proverbs 31:30, Ephesians 2:10, 1 Peter 3:3-4. These verses share God’s truth about image and appearance. Challenge each other to memorize these powerful Bible verses!

Let me remind you once more – you are her role model! She is watching what you eat, your exercise regimen, skin care routine and demeanor during “that time of the month.” Self esteem rises and body image issues decrease as a result of feeling confident and comfortable with one’s body. Living a healthy, active lifestyle can aid in this!

You can even create a series of “dates” to help reinforce the truth about body image. My girls and I wake up to green tea and kickboxing with Jillian Michaels! Start exercising together, make healthy smoothies, calculate your BMI and challenge one another to positive exercise and diet changes, have a spa day where you teach her how to properly care for her hair, nails and skin.

Continue to verbally affirm her natural beauty. She’s listening, remember? And, if you’re anything like me, you could use the affirmation once in a while too.
