Summer Writing Contest!
Hey Secret Keeper Girls! Did you know that what you read matters? It’s true! Everything that we think about helps to shape who we are becoming. Stories are powerful! Because of this, we have to be careful about what we put in our minds. Are the stories in our music, television, and book choices helping to teach us what is good?
Jesus was great at using stories to teach us. He told stories about seeds, pearls, and even sheep to help teach lessons about life. These stories, called parables, were not necessarily true in that they actually happened, but they contained truth. How can that be? Well, a great storyteller can take an idea that is true and hide it inside a fictional story. All the great writers in history are remembered because they made a difference with their stories by putting true ideas in them.
Now it’s your turn!
Our challenge to you is this: Write an original work of fiction that is more than just a good story. What you write should have a purpose! Dannah Gresh did this when she got together with some author friends to write the Secret Keeper Girl fiction series. Now we want you to write a fictional short story that teaches a lesson about life. Your fictional story should teach us something true about God, being yourself, friendships, boys, bullying, kindness, or anything you think is important!
Send us your story and we just might pick it to be PUBLISHED on our Secret Keeper Girl blog! Plus we’ll send you a whole box of goodies to help you start a Secret Keeper Girl club like the characters do in our fiction books! And on top of that, you and your friends will get VIP tickets to come to a live Secret Keeper Girl event near you. As one of our published authors, you’ll get the entire Secret Keeper Girl experience!
Are you excited yet? Then get ready to write! One great way to prepare is to meet the authors of our Secret Keeper Girl fiction series! Tune in to our Facebook Live event on June 13th at 7:30 EST where authors Dannah Gresh, Chizzy Anderson, and Suzy Weibel will host a Tween Writing Workshop. They’ll teach you the 3 Things Every Short Story Must Have, and you will be able to ask them all of your writing questions!
CONTEST RULES: Stories must be an original work by the girl submitting them. Stories should be short fiction of less than 1,500 words (we won’t be particular, but it’s short fiction, so don’t send us the encyclopedia!). Only one submission per girl. Submissions must be entered by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Contest entry closes at midnight on June 30th. Contest is open to girls ages 7-12 in the US and Canada. One winner will receive the grand prize, including publication on the Secret Keeper Girl blog. For runners-up, ages 7-9 and 9-12 will be judged separately.
